Be honest, how frustrating is it when you are waiting for a delivery and it arrives late?
E-commerce has come a long way and has allowed millions of people to make essential purchases every day without even leaving their homes or offices. Using an app, you now have the ability to track the exact location of your item along with the ETA of the delivery.
But while this scenario provides a glimpse of the level of customer-centricity that businesses are striving to provide, we have barely scratched the surface in terms of what’s possible.
How can enterprises sink deep into customer service and satisfaction in order to gain an edge over competitors? In many different ways, the answer always comes back to how effectively they are using their data. The future will involve speeding up and scaling these functionalities to involve devices, customers, locations and data on a much larger scale.
Making Sense of Data That Comes Constantly From All Angles
With the oncoming wave of transformation that the IoT is set to bring, it won’t be long before businesses will have to figure out the best ways to make sense of data coming from thousands or even millions of previously offline and disconnected devices.
Consider the recent evolution of commercial vehicles which can now be tracked and managed remotely.
Enterprises will see all kinds of information coming at them, from all angles, at all times – be it traffic data, delivery statuses, vehicle movement and route logs, GPS and geolocation data, video feeds and so on. The data will be always streaming and exponentially growing. These are just some of the information that logistics companies have to manage and analyse to optimise operations and ensure your packages are trackable and will arrive on time.
Scania is a smart transport solutions provider which helps organisations to modernise and implement a data-driven approach by connecting them to their vehicles and drivers in order to turbocharge the productivity of their fleet.
Cloudera has enabled the company to create a data product with the ability to transform data coming from over 300,000 connected fleet vehicles into business insights in a reproducible, reliable and scalable way. As a result, Scania is now providing customers with a comprehensive fleet monitoring and planning solution which provides detailed information such as:
- Real-time fleet position
- Driver evaluation and vehicle performance
- Real-time and accumulated driving-time information
- Fuel consumption
- CO2 emissions
Having a deeper understanding of how their fleet is performing allows enterprises to act accordingly and make the best decisions. For instance, with real-time data streaming from source to target, Scania is able to detect whether a vehicle is slowing down due to traffic or due to other causes such as rush hour, damaged roads or extreme weather. Such analysis can paint a picture of the most efficient way to deploy appropriate vehicles and decide the best solutions. Data also enables organisations to identify potential problems early and spot long-term trends and patterns which they can use to their benefit.
Millions of devices translate to terabytes of data, but collecting data alone doesn’t necessarily add value to the enterprise collecting it. Read more about how Scania worked with Cloudera to achieve their connected fleet here.
